Listen to the cliches

Austin Saupe’s 74-pound weight loss started with a bet. He and a friend challenged each other to get healthy. Within a week his friend took himself out of the running and Austin, a 20-year-old nursing student, was $50 richer and on his way to a new life.

“I took it really seriously,” he said. “I’m glad I did it now.”

After losing 20 pounds running on the sidewalk in his neighborhood, he joined the Y and lost another 10 pounds before hitting a plateau. Austin connected with trainer Mark Christofferson in February and since then has dropped another 44 pounds from his 6’1”-frame thanks to weight training and running.

Austin allows himself one cheat meal a week, but otherwise follows a regular routine of healthy eating and regular exercise. His advice to others:

“Listen to the clichés and just do it.”
