Y-READS! Literacy Success
Myakka River Elementary student Maddie, age 8, is a fan of animal stories – sharks, reptiles and frogs rate the highest.
The second grader, who is naturally drawn to math and science, gets extra time to practice her reading skills and learning more about her favorite creatures in our YMCA READS! literacy program. Twice a week after school she works with a volunteer on phonics and reading comprehension and the hard work is paying off.
“READS is such a fantastic program,” said her grandmother, Kathy. “Maddie’s grades are improving; I can’t say enough about how good the Y has been."
Program Director Linda Ware says that Maddie puts forth a full effort daily.
“Her attitude and desire will take her far in her reading journey,” Ware said.
YMCA READS! is a free, state-wide literacy mentoring program for children in kindergarten through third grade. Volunteer mentors meet twice a week with students after school to help them improve their literacy comprehension and basic reading skills.
